Working Effectively with Families of Juvenile Offenders

Supervision officers consistently report that involving families in the supervision process is one of the most important, but challenging tasks they face (Center for Juvenile Justice Reform, 2008). Supervision officers appreciate the value of including families in the supervision process but often have difficulty communicating with families and increasing family involvement. Further, guidance is lacking for community corrections professionals on how to overcome the challenges that often go along with involving families in the supervision process. This course will delve into the aspects of family involvement linked to improving outcomes among youth under supervision and practical strategies officers can put into use to improve family engagement in the supervision process. The goal of this course is to help juvenile probation officers working in community corrections learn strategies they can employ to improve family engagement in their work with youth on community supervision.
