Attracting, hiring, and retaining quality people in the workplace can be a challenge for some agencies. To attract competent applicants and retain capable workers, you need to know the knowledge, skills, abilities, and attributes a competent and capable worker needs to possess to be successful in your agency, organization or department. You also need to have strategies in place to motivate and keep those employees engaged so they will be more likely to stay.

- Describe what core competencies for community corrections staff are
- Identify preferred core competencies for line staff
- Discuss pros and cons for conducting a behavioral based interview to improve your hiring efforts.
- Describe what you would need to do to revise your agency’s hiring and personnel management process to be more focused on competencies
- List factors that influence whether employees stay with or leave agencies
- Identify strategies to motivate and retain employees
