Reducing Employment Barriers for Individuals on Community Supervision

The labor market in today’s world is competitive. There are often hundreds of applicants vying for a limited number of positions. For individuals with criminal histories or, even worse, time spent in a correctional facility, the prospect of making it to the top of the applicant pool seems dismal. Lack of employment is 1 of the 8 criminogenic need factors identified by evidence-based research related to the likelihood of a person re-offending. Thus, it is no surprise that a requirement of community supervision is for individuals to obtain employment. Community supervision officers play an integral role in helping individuals on supervision be successful in achieving this goal. This course will discuss the common challenges justice-involved persons encounter related to employment. It will discuss strategies you can use to not only prepare individuals on supervision to achieve their employment goals, but also how you can work with employers to promote hiring individuals with criminal histories.
