Engaging Natural Supports to Improve Community Supervision Outcomes

People come on community supervision often with many and varied needs. More focus is often placed on addressing needs using formal supports, such as probation, treatment, or social services. Less focus is placed on helping people under supervision find and forge natural supports. People engaged in reentry overwhelmingly cite poor natural support as a need left unaddressed through community supervision. Further, they say that having or not having social support is often a factor in whether they engage in criminal behavior or not (Denney et al., 2014). Understanding the challenges that people face while on community supervision and how to best connect them to both formal and informal supports is a crucial step in reducing recidivism. It is also key to helping people on supervision maintain supports after the formal support they receive while on supervision ends. The goal of this course is to provide community supervision officers working with adult and juvenile populations with information on how to help people on community supervision engage and maintain natural supports to promote compliance and long-term success.
