Preventing and Responding to Corrections-Based Sexual Abuse

On September 4, 2003, President George W. Bush signed into law the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), the first ever federal legislation addressing the issue of sexual abuse and assault within correctional settings. Unfortunately, the name of the act can be misleading, as it is not just about prisons and it is not just about rape. The act, along with the recently released national PREA standards, address all types of sexual abuse and misconduct in all custodial correctional settings, including prisons, jails, police lock-ups, juvenile detention facilities, and community residential settings. Drawing upon material from Preventing and Responding to Corrections-Based Sexual Abuse: A Guide for Community Corrections Professionals, this course provides critical information about the Prison Rape Elimination Act, new national PREA standards, and the ways in which community corrections agencies and professionals can play a key role in efforts to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual abuse that occur within correctional contexts. The target audience for this course is front line officers and first-line supervisors within probation, parole, and other community corrections agencies. To assist participants in gaining knowledge and skills, this course includes a variety of interactive exercises, including scenarios and quizzes.
